Fifty Thousand Victims of Greed

58,220 U.S. soldiers and military personnel died in Vietnam. How many movies, miniseries, songs, and tears have we spent on them, deservedly? Almost that many people will die each and every year because our workplaces don’t work for human beings. The fact that any single person can talk about non-injustices like our three-month long buildup to Christmas not being sufficiently ecstatic while workers die literally every hour, the vast majority of it being preventable, demonstrates once again Dr. King’s brutal criticism of the moral paucity of Western civilization: “Modern man suffers from a kind of poverty of the spirit, which stands in glaring contrast to his scientific and technological abundance. We’ve learned to fly the air like birds, we’ve learned to swim the seas like fish. And yet we haven’t learned to walk the earth like brothers and sisters.”
